Creating a safe space for marginalized students is incredibly important to P.E. teacher Ms. Carisa Silva, which is why she is pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership. She values creating supportive and welcoming environments for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students and teachers, and she feels the best way for her to meet these goals is by earning this degree.
After getting her bachelor’s in Kinesiology/Exercise Science at Cal State Northridge, Ms. Silva had been teaching in Los Angeles for the past 13 years, but decided to move to San Francisco for new experiences and a different climate. She started the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at USC virtually this fall.
When asked why she decided to teach Physical Education she said, “I teach PE because well being and physical fitness are super important to me and it’s important that there are female teachers teaching this stuff.”
