Mr. Biorn’s Golf Journey

As an avid golfer, biology teacher, Mr. Biorn came close to becoming a professional golfer when he was younger, but even though it never became his career, he still enjoys the sport, continuing to play multiple times a month.

Golf became a big part of Mr. Bjorn’s  life when he became 11 years old. Everyday after school, he would ride his bicycle with his friends and play all sorts of sports. One sport that really stood out was golf since there was a huge field nearby his neighborhood. Once he and his friends bought some cheap golf equipment, they started to play golf for hours and instantly got hooked on playing.

Mr. Biorn then joined his middle school golf team, continued playing through high school, and later played for 2 years in college. At this point, Mr. Biorn nearly became a professional golfer, but he didn’t qualify, barely missing the cut by just 5 strokes. At his peak, he had a handicap of 4 and his best score was a 72 while playing in a tournament. Instead of continuing to pursue professional golf though, an academic scholarship led him to step away from the sport for years.

Over 40 years have passed since Mr. Biorn started to play golf as he is turning 55 this year. He’s hoping to play against seniors in the Northern California Association League. He plays competitively in the Northern California Golf Association League, playing 2-3 weekends a month.

”What I love so much is how competitive it is, being outside playing is relaxing, every shot you take is different, and the sport is 100 percent all up to you in general,” says Mr. Biorn.

The best experience of his golf career was when he finished 2nd in a big tournament in California. This moment is something he will always remember because this is the best achievement he had while playing golf. Mr. Biorn has also gotten some bad experience white playing golf, like the time when he had been hit by a golf ball and had to sit out for half a season.

Golf has changed Mr. Biorn’s life because of how he is able to connect with other people who play the sport. From students from Galileo who have joined the golf team to people from his neighborhood, golf has been something that has connected Mr. Biorn with other people.  After all these years of playing he keeps enjoying the sport and will continue to connect with people from the golf community.
