Wanting to be away from home, Special Education English teacher Ms. Joy left Taiwan and moved to the Bay Area in 1998. Ms. Joy decided to leave Taiwan because she never felt she fit in anywhere, and decided it would be more interesting to be an outsider in another country than to stay in her homeland.
Ms. Joy first lived in San Francisco for 3 years but later decided to live in Oakland as she appreciated the town’s progressive political vibe, and it was home to the Black Panther Party in the 60s.
Another essential point is that Ms. Joy enjoys the Bay Area for its calm and peaceful weather. She says, “Taiwan is very hot during summer and then we have a lot of raining seasons and about 5 typhoons every year, and we are very lucky in the Bay Area with the stable climate.”
