After not winning a game in 4 years, as well as losing this year’s season opener, the Galileo Softball team finally got a win (22-9) against Academy High School on March 17th. The team then added another victory to their season, beating Raoul Wallenberg High School 27-2 on Monday, March 21st, bringing the Lions into second place in Division 2.
A large reason for Galileo’s 1st victory was due to the Academy’s starting pitcher’s inaccuracy, as she gave Galileo a large number of walks and chances to steal bases, which allowed the Lions to jump out to a big lead in the three innings, thanks to short-stop Kayliann S. hitting a bases-clearing triple.
Since the Lions were leading by 10 runs, the game only lasted 5 innings, sealing the victory for the Lions. Team captain Isabella I. said, “It was a good game! It feels really good to win after 4 years.”
In the game against Wallenburg, their starting pitcher also had problems throwing accurately, giving the Lions a number of walks. Towards the end of the second inning they switched out to another pitcher that threw some strikes but Galileo was able to turn these into hits, helping the Lions to a big lead. Back-up second baseman, Alejandra Z. was able to hit a double bring bases two and three home.
“If we keep playing like this, I think we’ll have a good chance of winning the Division Champion this year,” starting pitcher Kaia B said after Monday’s game.
