My Experience with Distance Learning

By Timothy Dare, staff writer

Timothy Dare- Grade 12

When online school first started, I was really excited and thought it would be easier than regular school and I wouldn’t have to do much work. My expectations were pretty accurate last year. My teachers didn’t assign that much work. Our schedule was also pretty relaxed as we had each class one time a week. I had a lot of free time and liked online school more than regular school. Some of my teachers didn’t even want to have zoom meetings and just assigned us some work each week.

When I learned that we were going to have online school again this year, I thought it would be the same thing and thought it would be as easy as last year. My expectations were wrong though. The schedule this year was different as we had each class three times a week. Teachers also are assigning a lot of work and I’ve struggled to keep up with the work from all my classes.

I also find it hard to focus in online classes. There are a lot  distractions at home like people talking in the background and trying not to go on my phone. Since last year was so easy, it’s gotten me into a bad habit of procrastinating and not doing my work on time. As a result all my work piles up and I have to struggle to do all of it before the ending of the marking period.

Distance learning this year has been a challenging and different experience. I’ve seen my grades drop because I feel like it’s harder to keep up since the pace of school seems much faster. I prefer in-person school more because I find it easier to learn in person and there are less distractions.
