Trees over fountains: StartUp’s Canopy Project

By Ivy Liang with Michelle Liao

After 3 months of planning, funding, and gathering supplies, the StartUp Academy helped take on the role of beautifying the school through painting murals on the walls as part of the “Canopy Project”, a student-led project designed to encourage students to channel their creativity into decorating the walls of Galileo with commutative murals of trees surrounding some of the school’s water fountains.

Originally designed last year by StartUp students, alumni Dylan Shalvarjian, Kaden Tobias, and Ray Shrestha, the Canopy Project gained the support of the other students in the class. What began as a donation project where donors’ names were written on a leaf, the Canopy Project transformed into a multi-party project where students collaborated with the company, Williams Sonoma and the program, Where Art Lives volunteers to paint the murals.

During the upcoming spring semester of 2024, the StartUp Academy plans on continuing the project on other fountains around the school, but for now, they are currently seeking out volunteers and looking to collaborate with the art department to continue painting more murals around the school.
