Surviving detention with your favorite teacher

To address the issue of late students coming to class after lunch, the school has added a detention system for students who show up after the bell from lunch. Students who are given detention are forced to stay after school on Tuesdays or Thursdays in the school cafeteria. Since detention is a lonely place, most people would want somebody to keep them company, like a staff member. We at the Galileo press went around the school and asked students and teachers, “If you got sent to detention, which teacher would you go with and why?”

“I would go with Ms. Donahue because she would make us do something activity-wise that will help us more think about what we did to get sent to detention.”

– Ms. Fertado (ELD Eng)

“My first choice would be Doctor Edwards because Doctor Edwards would entertain me while I’m in detention.”

– Ms. Camp (Special Ed)

“I would probably say Mr. O because I feel like Mr. O is really fair. What I mean by that is like he’s gonna be super nice, but also hold me accountable.”

– Mr. Mendoza (PE)

“I want to get sent with anybody in the science department because I know that if I was in detention, chances are I’ve tried to talk and make the time go by faster. And everybody in the science department is super interesting. It’s not to say other teachers aren’t, but I know the people in the science department were really close. So I know that’s not really the answer you’re looking for because I would walk to detention by anybody in the science department happily. I would probably want to go to detention just to hang out with them for a while. “

– Mr. Cadette (Biology)

”Mr. Cossey because he’s outgoing, easy to talk to, very laid back, and I get along with him well and I can also make jokes and talk to him like he’s my friend rather than my teacher.”

– Zaki Z. 12th

“Mr. Benchimol because it will be very funny to just let him sit in silence and he would probably meditate.”

– Mia F. 12th

“Coach Mark because he’s my favorite teacher and I think he would respect why I’m in detention which I don’t know why I would be. Like he would empathize and sympathize and at the same time follow the rules and enforce the rules of detention.”

– Leo B. 11th

“Mr. Vilar, the Spanish teacher, because he’s funny and I like him. I had him sophomore year and he’s really nice to me and always like really nice to every student and if I was in detention with him, I would talk to him the whole time.”

– Leila C. 11th

“Mr O. because he’s chill and he don’t scream at no one and he’s always having fun. Nice teacher overall.”

– Jeremiah P. 10th

“I would pick Mr. Adams to go to detention with me because he has a really funny humor and he always laughs and yaps and I yap a lot so we can yap together at detention.”

– Sarah C. 10th

“Mr. Keough because he doesn’t yell at me and because when I get in trouble, he just tells me to stop doing it. He also yells at other people and not me.”

– Miguel R. 9th

“Mr. Gomez, the Spanish teacher because he’s nice and he’s not rude and I also like the fact that during detention, he would probably teach me the work and not just let me sit there and do nothing.”

– Samiyah A. 9th
