Poll: Favorite Thanksgiving Memories and Traditions

With fall coming to a close, Thanksgiving gives everyone time to reflect and reminisce on their favorite family memories. Regardless of your background, Thanksgiving is a day for most to gather and dine with family while celebrating all the things you’re grateful for. The Galileo Press asked teachers “What is one of your favorite Thanksgiving memories or traditions?”

“When I was a kid, my dad organized a touch football game every Thanksgiving, and my sister and I always never wanted to play, so we made sure we were on the same team to guard each other, so we could just physically assault each other and it was really fun.”

– Mrs. Gates, English teacher

“When I was younger, my grandparents came to visit for Thanksgiving, we were in a small apartment, and to get seconds we would all have to get food at the same time or there wouldn’t be enough space.”

– Kristin Tatum, College Counselor

“We used to have really large Thanksgivings, and we always invited around 5 people that didn’t have anywhere to go because their families weren’t here.”

– Mrs. Sheppick, Spanish teacher

“A tradition I have is gathering with friends instead because I don’t celebrate with family. I have Caucasian friends who celebrate it, so they’ll have traditional Thanksgiving food and games.”

– Ms. Chen, Math teacher

“Since my birthday always happens around thanksgiving, every 4th or 5th year, my birthday lands on Thanksgiving, so it’s double the party and all my family comes to celebrate Thanksgiving and me.”

– Mr. Mendribil, French teacher

“One time I was sick at home and my brother showed up and he didn’t want me to skip Thanksgiving so he came and got me, so that was a good memory.”

– Lee Schimmel, English teacher

“One time, I carved a turkey on a plastic tarp on the kitchen floor because they didn’t have a cutting board big enough for the turkey and there was no counter space for it.”

– Mr. Chu, Counselor

“We all get excited when we get the mac and cheese and yams, and it’s this big moment when we have to put a little bit of each on a fork, and everyone takes a bite at the same time.”

– Coach Nick, Coach and security guard
