Ways to Raise School Spirit

Last year, low attendance at dances and sports events illustrates the need for more community involvement at Galileo. This year, Galileo leaders are trying to figure out ways to strengthen student participation. With that, the Galileo Press has asked students and staff this question, “What event could the school host to promote more school spirit and why?”

“I want to see us bring back a back-to-school assembly so that students can find a sense of community at the beginning of the school year.”

– Ms. Capozzi, Spanish Teacher

“We should have more events during lunch so people don’t leave all the time. I also remember that Galileo has a roof, so maybe students can have stargazing on the roof at night.”

– Ms. Dave, English Teacher

“We should have math festivals, math contests, and everything relating to math because students love math, and more math would be exciting for students.”

– Mr. Ring, Math Teacher

“I think we should do something where every Friday, we highlight a different club at Galileo, so clubs can promote their organization. The club fair is good, but we should rotate specifically for each club.”

– Mr. Chu, Counselor

“I want to see a basketball tournament that can bring people together. The half-court challenge was cool. I want to see people dress up as their favorite NBA players.”

– Alexander D. Freshman

“There should be an event where everyone gathers and interacts with each other. I like the soak a senior because it involves a ton of people. I saw many students watching.”

– Aiden M, Freshman

“I think they should have more lunchtime events. I know we already have a lot of them but when I see it happen, I feel like there’s more of a community.”

– Kota W, Sophomore

“I think we should have a few more events with Black History Month. BSU was planning on creating a dance. I also want to see more murals.”

– Jhemiria W, Sophomore

“I want more pep rallies with games. Maybe they could be in the gym to promote a bigger community. I want to see bonds between students and teachers.”

– Zeina S, Junior

“I want more spirit weeks because it makes school more fun and has more student interactions.”

– Xavier B, Junior

“There should be more student engagement with sports. I see that not a lot of people were at sports events last year, which is disappointing. When I watch high school movies, there are a lot of American schools that have hype sports events.”

– Jason F, Senior

“I want a winter ball because dances get everyone excited. I wish we could be like a stereotypical high school. However, the dance should not be at school, but at a nicer venue.”

– Maya W, Senior
