With a passion for sports, first-year Galileo PE teacher, Ms. Amaro has jumped right into Galileo athletics as an assistant coach for both JV girls volleyball & basketball. She is looking forward to building a solid foundation in girls’ sports at Galileo in the coming years.
“I had a different basketball coach every year I played basketball,” Ms. Amaro says. She continued, “There were not a lot of returning coaches, especially with women. It’s nice to be a good example for students and learn from our head coach.”
Born in Mexico and raised in Soledad, a town in Monterey County, California, Ms. Amaro developed a deep connection to her ethnicity. The culture in the Bay Area motivated her to attend San Francisco State University. Thanks to connections with former classmates who are now student-teachers at Galileo, she happily landed a job as a physical education teacher.
When asked about her current experience as a P.E. teacher, Ms. Amaro said, “Most people don’t expect me to be a native Spanish speaker. It surprises them when they hear me give instructions in Spanish.”
Ms. Amaro wants the students to know this: don’t be afraid to try new things. She says, “I didn’t start playing basketball until middle school; it’s okay to join a sport late.”
