Getting a full sports scholarship for college basketball, P.E. teacher Ms. Allison, talks about her experience with scholarships and how they can change a students life. Basketball was always been a big aspect of her life, ever since she was a child, which helped pave the way for her to graduate college for free.
The scholarship she received paid for all her school, housing, and food in full. The original college that she had the scholarship for was Arizona State but after her mother got sick she had to decommit and ended up at SF State, in order to be close to home.
Ms. Allison, being one of four kids, meant that her parents couldn’t afford to pay for college between four kids, so when she was presented with a full ride scholarship, her parents and herself were very excited. They didn’t need to worry about paying for college and she didn’t have to worry about anything to do with finances, she could focus on just her studies and playing basketball.
One of Ms. Allison’s biggest accomplishments as a college basketball player was breaking a school record while playing a game at UC San Diego. While only playing in the 1st half during a game her sophomore year, she scored 33 points. It also happened to be the same weekend her grandmother had passed away. Ms. Allison said, “It felt great to bring her family something to be proud of and enjoy after experiencing such a sad event in the family.”
