Coming back from school after a year and a half, there are several things I noticed that had changed or needed change.

One thing I noticed coming back from school is that there is a small change in the schedule. Before the pandemic, school starts at 8am and ends at 3:10pm. Now school starts and ends 40 minutes later. Although I enjoy waking up later because I’m able to get a little more sleep, I don’t exactly like leaving school 40 minutes later since I have to change some of my already established routines that I had post-lockdown.

Another thing I noticed coming back from school is that despite the pandemic still going on, we are still having class in an enclosed room and the halls during the passing period are still always crowded. I feel like schools would be a huge breeding ground for covid as you might come across several people with it and not even know it. There would also be people who might purposely get themselves or others infected which is also should be concerning.

One last thing I noticed coming back from school is that there are way more kids roaming around the hallways during class time. Although some of them are TAs, going to the bathroom, or some other legitimate reason, the majority of them are skipping class. I feel that if you are just going to skip class, don’t come to school in the first place because there isn’t a point of coming to school if you’re going to just run around in the halls.

As a student of Galileo, I have noticed a lot of things that have not happened previously at Galileo that occur now.

An example of this is the immaturity of many students. I could be in class, and some students would be running around the hallways and slamming the teacher’s door shut. It is very annoying, and disrespectful for the teacher and their class.

Another example of immaturity that I have found in students is the fact that many students come into class late and nonchalant about their rude behavior (especially when arriving late is a recurring theme ) and do not do their work in class. This I find is very disrespectful and rude, because the teacher takes time to plan out their lesson plan and generally do their best to teach the class while the students put in the effort to learn and excel inside and outside of class.

Another thing that I notice that has started happening this semester that has not previously happened is that students are learning to advocate for themselves. For example, students protesting administration response to sexual harassmsent cases. They are speaking up for themselves and demanding change. Although there have been few protests in the past few years, I have not seen this level of students demanding change. As a fellow student, I feel very proud of what the student community plans and actions. On a lower scale, students have started advocating for themselves by talking with teachers and being open about suggesting changes in the classroom. This could be students requesting teachers for a study hall period or requesting teachers for less homework. I am proud of students advocating for themselves because this promotes positive change in this school.
