Jessica’s Job Journey

By: Jessica Chow, staff writer

Like most teenagers my age, I applied for a job because I wanted money. To me, money is happiness. I’m looking for money so I can buy more clothes and albums, and having a job could help me justify my spending habits since I’ll be spending my own money, and not my parents.

But I had reservations. People around me, namely my friends and family, usually complain about work, and that instilled the idea that working is usually not that fun. I’ve always seen work, in general, as something people have to do, whether they like it or not, and that was also in my mind as I was thinking about a job. But what pushed me in the end to wanting to find a job was how it could also give me more work experience, which will look good for future jobs and college.

With my mind firmly made up to try and find a job, I reached out to my friend who works at a boba shop since I thought a job at a boba shop would be nice. Working at a boba shop sounded appealing, especially with the incentive of free boba. When I was searching for other job options that were near my neighborhood, they did not seem appealing to me, so I hoped that working at a boba shop would be bearable. But I didn’t expect the job to actually be enjoyable!

I assumed I would easily be able to get the job at the boba shot because they were understaffed and I had been recommended by my friend. I applied by messaging her boss in October. But after months went by and I didn’t get a reply, I gave up job hunting.

Unexpectedly, in December I got a reply, most likely because the holiday season is always busy. I didn’t want to give up my winter break though, so I ghosted him back!!! In January, my friend told me that they were severely understaffed, so I finally texted back. I had an interview the same week, and it was extremely scary. The employer said he was going to let me know if I got the job during the weekend. The weekend came and I still did not get a response, so I just assumed I got rejected. To my surprise though, a week later, I got a text saying that I needed to come in for training.

I thought I wasn’t going to like training because I was already tired from school, but it was actually fun. The work isn’t too hard, it’s just putting in the toppings and making the drink. I like putting in the toppings because it is quite easy and the toppings look nice. I also get to play my own music, which is another plus. I really enjoy listening to music, and playing my favorite songs at work ups my mood. Something that is part of my training is making all the drinks on the menu and trying it out. It makes me learn how to make drinks and I also get to drink free boba, which is always nice. Whenever I go to train, it has been very busy, but at least it gives me more experience. I don’t get called in that often and I honestly wish to work more, to make more money!
