Life on a boat; Ms. Hyatt’s Florida travels

By Michelle Liao, Staff Writer

As part of her sabbatical for the SFUSD district over the last 5 years, librarian Ms. Hyatt traveled around Florida and lived on a sailboat with her husband for 2 years, enjoying the experience despite the obstacles she faced.

First purchasing the boat in Florida, Ms. Hyatt traveled from Vero Beach down to Miami, then to the Boca Chita Lighthouse by the Biscayne National Park, around the Everglades, and up Fort Myers Beach.

During the trip, Ms. Hyatt faced obstacles with mold, mosquitoes, and boat maintenance, as being on a boat was very demanding, requiring her to maintain the engine, sails, and hull.

Despite these challenges, Ms. Hyatt enjoyed visiting aquatic national parks and nature preserves, noting the beauty of Marco Island. She said, “I went to a big nature preserve in Marco Island next to the Ten Thousand Islands with lots of beautiful birds. I remember seeing a beautiful pink bird that looked like a flamingo.”

After her sabbatical, Ms. Hyatt returned to San Francisco in March and applied to be a librarian for SFUSD in April, leading to her current position as a librarian at Galileo.
