Librarian’s love of literature

By Tenzin Dawa, Staff Writer

Growing up in San Francisco, new librarian, Mr Chan’s fondest memories were of exploring the old San Francisco public library where the Asian art museum currently stands. The San Francisco public library was like a playground to him, where he’d run up the stairs and read any book or magazine he wanted to. Mr Chan always loved books growing up and he always read on his own outside of classes.

Mr Chan formerly worked as a librarian at Ida B Wells continuation high school for a year, before that, he worked as a teacher-librarian at Lincoln high school for 9 years.  Mr Chan believes that being a teacher prior to becoming a librarian is a pivotal experience because it helps you learn how to speak to people, formulate ideas more clearly and express them in a way that’s understood.

Mr Chan was suddenly reassigned to Galileo at the end of last school year. Mr Chan likes Galileo so far and he thinks the students and teachers are very incredible, saying, “I haven’t had any hiccups or roadblocks.” While he may be new to the school, Mr Chan has some family history here. His older brother went here when he was just a kid, he was here in the 70s, before that his mother went here in the 50s.
