Alumni returns to teach

By Miguel Eusebio, Staff Writer

Galileo graduate, science teacher, Mr. Chen wants to inspire and motivate his students in the same way he was inspired by his former teachers. Although when he was in high school he saw it as a strict teaching style, as a teacher, he now believes this style to be very effective, especially for high school students.

Mr. Chen explains that one of his most impactful teachers, US History teacher, Ms. Tang was the most strict but most effective teacher he had. While being in her class he thought of it as “torture” but soon learned to appreciate what she was doing because of the results he was getting from being taught by her.

He later on went to apply them into his own classes to help his students mentally and academically improve themselves. Mr. Chen doesn’t feel the need to change a thing from the way Ms. Tang teaches but he’s limited on the amount of work to give only because he doesn’t teach an AP class.

Another teacher Mr. Chen pointed out as an example is History teacher Mr. Rodriguez, who taught him to apply things he learned in class to real life situations. He explains, “a good teacher does not promote just one value and it’s up to you to take out what you find necessary at the moment.”

Doing Kung Fu his entire life, Mr. Chen believes this is another way he is able to pass on the lessons he picked up to his students. In the time he did Kung Fu he learned that you should keep trying things with a certain type of correction without having it bore you. His goal is to transfer that to his way of teaching because he likes helping his class feel like they learned something new. He enjoys making students feel as if a lightbulb went off in their head.
