Varsity Boys Basketball Goes 1-1 In Home-stand

The boys varsity basketball team took their first loss of the regular season against the Washington Eagles in a devastating game on Wednesday, January 8th, but had a redeeming win against the Academy Wolves 2 days later, on Friday, January 10th.

The Lions started sluggishly, allowing the Eagles to take an early 12-3 lead. But after an early timeout, sophomore point guard Nathan L.’s two 3-pointers gave the Lions the spark they needed to end the first quarter down only 3 points. The second quarter was played close, with Washington taking a 5 point lead into the half.

It wasn’t until the second half that Washington’s offense outpaced the Lion’s efforts of scoring. While sophomore forward Kody F.’s aggressive drives earned the Lions 6 points to open the quarter, his effort couldn’t sustain the Lions, and the Eagles built an 11 point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Although the Lions tried to mount a comeback, key Washington baskets sustained their lead as the game ended, with the resulting score being 53-64. Senior guard Darryn W. states, “If we took better shots throughout the game we would have been able to keep up with their fast paced-offense.”

The Lions only had a day to lick their wounds as they faced off against the 0-2 Academy Wolves. Galileo jumped out to a fast start as they opened up a 26-9 lead in the first quarter and by halftime, the Lions were up 43-14, with Darryn W. leading the charge with 16 points. At the height of the game, Kody F. impressively threw down the first dunk of his high school career.

“The game against Academy was a good game for everybody. Everyone got in and we got to work on things we do in practice”, said sophomore forward Jordan D.

The Lions continued their victory march in the second half, ultimately taking the win 81-24. Though they were able to cruise to victory, the team has a tough few road games coming up as  they face Mission on Monday, January 13th and Lowell on Tuesday, January 14th.
