After the venue didn’t respond in time to host a winter formal, the Galileo ASB pivoted & is now hosting a Valentine’s dance, “Galentines,” at the Italian Athletic Club on February 8th from 7 to 10 p.m. According to the ASB cabinet, “Galentines” will be a school dance that’s a step above homecoming as it’s located at an outside venue in the neighborhood near school, instead of in the Van Ness gym.
At the beginning of November, Galileo’s ASB originally planned to host a winter formal at the Italian Athletic Club in early January, but the venue didn’t get back to ASB until December 21st, just as winter break started, which forced them to cancel the winter formal because it was too late to sell tickets and promote the event.
While a Valentine’s dance was not their first choice, ASB cabinet members are looking forward to the dance. “I think Valentine’s dances are cliched but this one is cool and I’m excited to be in a dance that is at a venue and not at Galileo. I’m excited to bring two of my friends because we are allowing outside guests,” says ASB President Mia F.
ASB Historian Dragon L. added, “Although I wanted a winter formal, I think the idea of a “GALentines” dance is amazing and I can bring all my friends to the dance!”
While the Winter Formal and “Galentines” are different dances, they also have a lot of similarities. They both are hosted at the Italian Athletic Club, have the same budget, and feature a snack bar with cookies, chips, and soda. However, the winter formal tickets were also supposed to be sold for $30, but outside guests would still have to pay $40. The preferred dress code for Galentines is pink, red, white, and black.
ASB President Mia F. wanted to name Valentine’s dance the “Cupid’s Shuffle” but A.P. Avar made up the name “Galentines”. Mia and the ASB were hesitant about the new name, but in the end chose ‘Galentines’ and lowered the price by $5 since the name didn’t seem very enticing.
Students are very excited about the dance like sophomore Juliette F., “I’m excited for the dance because it’s not at school and it’s different from the classic dances we have.” Junior Antonio G. also says, “I feel pretty excited, I wanna see what happens. I hope it’s better than homecoming, so let’s find out.”
Tickets for the dance are available for $25 ($20 with ASB sticker) in the ASB store for the next three weeks, with outside guests allowed to attend for $40.
