The Galileo Lions wrestling team kicked off their league season in spectacular fashion, dominating their first true league match against Balboa High School on January 15th with a decisive 38-27 victory over their opponents. The team showcased both skill and determination, proving they are a team to be reckoned with in the league this year.
The match, held at Galileo’s home gym, featured strong performances across all weight classes, with key wins from both experienced and newcomers wrestlers. The final score highlighted the team’s overwhelming dominance and solidified their confidence moving forward.
One of the highlighted performers of the match was Jumah G., a senior wrestler who wrestled at 132 lbs, said, “It feels great to get this win, especially since it’s our first league match of the season,” Jumah said, adding, “Everyone worked hard, and we were all focused. We know this is just the beginning, and we’ve got bigger goals.”
Senior captain Josh A., who wrestled at 138 lbs, said, “We’ve been preparing for this, and it feels good to see all our hard work pay off,” Josh shared. “But this is just one match. We’re hungry for more wins and we’re not going to stop pushing ourselves.”
The Galileo coaching staff were thrilled with the teams showing as all the extra hours of practice showed. “I’m really proud of the way our guys came out and controlled the match from the beginning,” said head coach Ronald Griffin, adding, “They’ve been training hard, and it’s starting to show. This is the kind of performance we’ve been expecting, and it’s only going to get better from here.”
Co-head coach Kenny Griffin, who works closely with the team’s strategy and technique, echoed Coach Ronald’s view of the team, saying, “Our wrestlers really showed what they’re capable of today. We’ve got a lot of potential, and this win gives us the momentum we need to keep pushing. The team is looking sharp, and we’re excited for what’s to come.”
The Galileo wrestling team’s victory marks a strong start to their league season, and with a mix of experts and hungry newcomers, it looks like they’re ready to continue their success throughout the year.
