The Galileo administration decided to distribute free metal water bottles to students to promote hydration, encourage sustainability, reduce plastic waste and cut down on the consumption of unhealthy beverages.
The idea of handing out water bottles came from principal Dr. Rogers. All of the water bottles were distributed to the history teachers, as each teacher got 6 boxes of 150 water bottles. There is a place on the water bottle where each student can write their name, grade and pronouns on it.
Assistant principal, Mr. Flores says he sees many kids in the halls drinking unhealthy beverages like sodas and sweetened coffees as well as a study that came out saying high school students don’t drink enough water, so the administration wanted to do something to help students.
Some social studies teachers were happy to help pass out the water bottles to students. American Democracy teacher Mr. Ayala said he really liked the design of it, adding,” I like the idea behind it. A lot of my students are dehydrated, and need more water”.
American History teacher Mr. O’Connor had similar thoughts as Mr. Ayala. “I liked the water bottle. It was a really nice design for a water bottle, and for something that was free. I liked the message behind it. I think it’s great for more kids to ditch behind the soda for a more healthy alternative in water.” Mr. O’Connorl expressed his disdain for the kids not taking the bottles. He said some classes took them, some other classes only a few took them, leaving him with extras.

Some students also seemed to like receiving a water bottle from the school. Senior Wellington Reyes said, “I liked the water bottle that got passed out to me. The design of it was pretty cool. To be honest, I would never really use it. I do think for people who don’t have a water bottle it can be a good way to stay hydrated.”
However other students weren’t that happy about getting one. Senior Matthew Garcia said, “My opinion on the water is that it’s honestly pretty bad. I didn’t like the design of it at all. I think the odds of me using this water bottle are really low, since I have one at home.”
