The Golden Apple and Golden Lion awards have been a tradition at Galileo for years. The idea of it is to give awards to staff at Galileo who have done an especially good job this year. Students vote on the staff member who they thought would deserve the award.
The winner of the Golden Apple award turned out to be math teacher Ms. Nelson by a slim margin over science teacher Mr. Okochi. On the other hand, the winner of the Golden Lion award was the custodial staff, who won by a huge margin, with over 60% of the votes.
The Golden Apple includes teachers, while the Golden Lion includes the staff at Galileo. The teachers chosen for Golden Apple include Mr. Okochi, science teacher Ms. Stollmeyer, Ms. Nelson, history teacher Mr. Jung, and math teacher Mr. Honnef.
The staff chosen for the Golden Lion award included; counselor Ms. Yu, counselor Ms. Wong, JCYC staff Auxi Trejos, JCYC staff Kristin Tatum, and the custodial staff.
In response to winning the award, Ms. Nelson had this to say, “[The award] means a lot as it shows that students appreciate the time, effort and care that I put in.”
The custodial staff were also appreciative of being voted the winners. After hearing that the custodian staff won the Golden Lion Award, Wei Satu, a Galileo custodian said this , “Teachers and students giving us the award and recognition for doing a good job in the school. I feel great that I’m being honored for being a custodian.”
Carmen Lei, another custodian working at Galileo said, “It gives us recognition for all of our hard work that we put into the school. I feel that we have been noticed by the students and that makes us encouraged [to work harder] for such a job.”
