Arts & Crafts, helping children is our path

by Brandon R & Jimmy Liu, staff writer

Students looking for a place where they’re able to express their creativity in crafting & also help support children’s hospitals, should check out the “Crafts for Cancer Club”. Students use club time to knit & crochet, do origami and plan for events to sell their crafts all in the name of helping those who are in the hospital.

The club often sells its crafts through school events such as food fest, love fest, etc. All the profits go straight to children’s hospitals across the Bay Area, serving kids who are dealing with cancer or other health conditions. For example, on Valentine’s Day, all the profit the club made from their crochet roses and star jars went straight to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

While the club has had success selling its crafts, this was actually not the original club plan; they originally hoped to be able to give away the crafts they made, but due to Covid safety protocols, they weren’t allowed to give the crafts to children, so instead, they changed to selling them instead and then donating all proceeds to children’s hospitals. So far, the club has already been able to donate over $230 dollars.

In addition to selling at school events, students are able to purchase and support the club by purchasing crafts in 312. In the future, the club also plans on selling crafts at the ASB Store during lunch or having them delivered to students in class.

Students are free to join this community with over 50 students. New members get assistance in creating their first craft. Students in Crafts for Cancer are always willing to help first-timers in creating crochet roses, origami stars, origami, or stuffed animals. Club president Connie Huang said, “Crafts for Cancer from day one has held a special place in my heart. I hope that even after the current officers graduate that the underclassmen will continue this club.”

If students wish to join this club in supporting kids around the bay, they can contact them at galileocraftsforcancer@gmail.com, their Instagram, @galileo_craftsforcancer, or pop into one of their meetings and Friday at lunch, in room 312.
