Lions get by Buc’s on Senior Night

By Jenny Chen, Staff Writer

The Galileo Varsity Boys volleyball team won a very intense and stressful 5 set match g against Balboa on senior night last Wednesday, May 3rd. The scores were (25-23), (23-25), (23-25), (25-22), (4-15)Adding to the excitement of the match, the JV boys & managers helped decorate the gym with posters and balloons before the game for the four seniors.

The match started out poorly for the Lions as they lost the first set, 25-23. The Lions started off slow with many hitting errors and missed serves, giving Balboa the advantage in the first set, as the Buccaneers started off well, and didn’t make many errors.

The Lions turned things around though In the second set, winning 25-23. The team cleaned up their net errors and missed serves and even though Balboa was still playing their game by putting tough serves against Galileo, the Lions strong defense and serves held Balboa off.

Galileo continued to play well in the third set as well, winning 25-23. The third set was the most intense with long rallies that both teams had to break out of. In the end, the Lions out rallied the Buccaneers,  which allowed them to claim the set, but the Lions had to work for every point they earned.

The Lions tried to close out the match in 4 sets, but unfortunately couldn’t close the deal, after the referees made a questionable call followed by a Galileo missed serve that essentially put the set away for Balboa.

The Lions regrouped though in the fifth set, starting with a 5-0 service run. The Lions closed the game out with strong offense, causing Balboa’s defense to break. They kept the serves going and didn’t miss any, which didn’t  allow the Buccaneers any free points. The Lions ended up cruising in the fifth set, 15-4.

The Lions finished their season 10-0 and will now play Balboa again in the playoffs on Tuesday, May 9 at home at 5:30.
