With back to back games to open the season the Girls Varsity Basketball team suffered a tough loss to Washington High School (32-56) on January 9th, but proved they are capable of bouncing back, as they secured a win over Academy (50-35) the next day.
Falling behind early against the Eagles, the Lioness trailed 15-23 at the end of the first quarter. The Lionesses’ defense struggled all night, which allowed the Eagles to get easy transition lay ups and wide-open threes. Senior Shuhan Y. felt disappointed about the loss, commenting that there wasn’t enough defensive and offensive communication. Senior Mia, F. said, “I think we just didn’t have the same fiery effort and energy that we usually have and that’s why we lost. We let them outplay us.”
Despite the loss, the team hit the road for an away game against the Academy Wolves and delivered an impressive bounce-back performance. The Lioness were led by junior Angelica H., who despite being sick, scored a team high 18 points. Angelica had to seek inspiration to play, as she described how she felt during the game. She said,“The game felt like forever, and I caught myself wheezing a lot. Gatorade and my family being there really helped me push through.”
This was the 2nd time the Lioness had beaten the Wolves, as they had already beaten them during the preseason. Sophomore Juliette F., who contributed 11 points, felt this time was a much more convincing win. She said, “Although we beat them in December, this time was better because we had more of our team playing, and we all played really well together!”
Looking ahead, the team will face Lowell High School on January 15th at home at 5:30pm.
