Prom pros and protests

by staff writers Giuseppe Palmer and Miles Eller

Galileo’s Senior Prom was the subject of much anticipation this year, as it was the first Galileo Prom to be held at the Academy of Sciences. Galileo students were excited about the venue and about the event. Tons of seniors and non-Galileo students went to prom, and we wanted to know what they thought about the event as a whole. Galileo Press asked them, “What was the highlight and lowlight of your prom experience?”

“A highlight from prom would definitely be seeing everyone all dressed up. It was so fun to walk around and chat with everyone I knew and see people’s outfits. As for a lowlight, I thought the DJ wasn’t that great. He played some good songs, but they were pretty basic and I thought a lot of the stuff he played wasn’t very good to dance to. But overall, I had a really good time. “

“As part of the senior cabinet, my highlight from Prom was finally being able to see all of our efforts paying off. We worked really hard and had to stress so much trying to work around all the last minute changes that Admin made. My lowlight was that the DJ didn’t seem to be there for us when we wanted song requests, but that wasn’t something the senior cabinet could have changed.”

Sammi H., senior

“My highlight would have to have been seeing everyone dance, especially dudes doing the splits. That was really fun to see. But I thought we should have made a playlist for the DJ, which we unfortunately didn’t do, so the music was not great.”

Dylan S., senior

“There were many highlights from prom but the photo booths and aquarium were definitely the best parts for me. Having multiple photo booths was a good way to ensure everyone had the opportunity to get their pictures. The aquarium was a very nice touch and it gave prom a nice passtime. Prom was very organized, big props to the class cabinet and chaperones! But a lowlight would have to be the DJ. He was not taking any song suggestions and when asked students were ignored. He played the same songs over and over again or songs majority of the students didn’t know.”

Deanna L., senior

“My highlight from Prom was the dancing. It was really fun to see everyone dancing together. But it would have been even better if the DJ had played better music, because a lot of the songs he did play weren’t very good.”

Mariano S., senior

“It was so fun getting to dance with all my friends and just have the time of my life being with them. I wish they had played more pop music, but the DJ that was hired was hired through the venue so we didn’t have any say in that.”

Lam T., senior

“A highlight from prom would just be having fun and dancing with all my friends. We had a really good time. But a lowlight would be not winning Prom court. I was nominated for Queen and Princess but I didn’t win either one.”

Kamiyah M. senior

“I loved seeing students outside of their natural habitat (school) and how proud they were of their Prom looks. I also really appreciated how many people ditched high heels in favor of more comfortable footwear. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough dancing! Get out there and boogie, will ya?”

Ms. Gates

“For me the highlight of Prom was definitely seeing the return to normalcy of students enjoying each other’s company in a way we couldn’t do during the pandemic. It was also really cool to have it at the Academy of Sciences and offer everything to those that weren’t into dancing. It’s always nice to give more opportunities for students to enjoy it. Honestly, there was no lowlight. It was a great night!”
