The boys tennis team bounced back after their opening season loss, winning 4-1 against the Burton Pumas on Wednesday, March 20th at Burton. This comes after a narrow loss to the Lincoln Mustangs, 4-3, at the start of the season on Wednesday, March 13th at Golden Gate Park.
In the matches against Burton, the boys team dominated, only losing one singles match where the sets were split. Singles players juniors Kay P. and Jacky L. won in two sets—Kay scored 6-1 in both, while Jacky scored 6-0 in both. Both doubles teams, junior Zeus C. with sophomore Chris L. and juniors Edison B. with Kyle L., won in two sets, all 6-0.
“I’m feeling pretty good about my first win,” said doubles player Chris L., adding, “I hope to keep it up throughout the rest of this season.”
Although the Lions dropped their first match to Lincoln, the Lions competed well. During the seven matches against Lincoln, the team’s top singles player, junior Kay P., won in two sets, 6-2 and 6-4, finally taking a win over his rival, while fellow singles player senior Isrrael M. also won in two sets, both 6-2. However only one doubles team won, freshman Nate L. and sophomore Jaray P. winning two sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
When asked about his thoughts on his first performance of the season, Kay P. said, “I’m very glad I won my first match of the season. Even though I don’t think I performed my best, there is always room for improvement.” He also highlighted the team’s bake sale, sharing that it was good to fundraise and bond with his teammates.
“It was a fun match,” added doubles player Zeus C., “even though we didn’t win, it was still nice to get out on the court and play against good competitors.”
Following the matches, Coach Simms said, “the improvement of the boys has been quite notable,” sharing that all the players are back to play another season. “Looking forward, I’m excited to get to know the players more. Many just started playing a couple of years ago, and with Coach Roth’s excellent coaching, they have learned quickly.”
The boys team will look to continue their winning ways when they play the Washington Eagles this Friday, March 22nd at Washington.
