Due to several different factors, the varsity volleyball team closed out a tough season with a record of 2-10. Despite their season not going the way they hoped it would go, the team was satisfied in knowing they gave their best effort.
According to the team’s coach, Mark Huynh, one big factor that played a part in the way the season went was not being able to play last year due to the pandemic. Many of the players were coming from the JV team in 2019 and then going straight to the varsity team this year. They had to come back to school having to learn all the fundamentals as they competed, as well as having to redevelop physically as athletes.
Despite these setbacks, the girls still had a positive outlook on the way the season went. Senior varsity player, Gianna Shen, said, “At the end of the day, it[the way we played] is about our growing progress [not just the season record].”
One takeaway for Coach Mark personally from the season is the difference of moving from coaching the boys volleyball team on and off for 13 years compared to having to coach the girls team this year after not coaching women since 2003. He learned that the two groups work and learn differently.
But overall he really enjoyed coaching the girls team. He said, “It was a good group of players as individuals which helped them all to get along and enjoy one another’s company throughout the season.”
Looking ahead to next year’s season, the varsity volleyball team will be looking to get back into playoff contention. The JV team had a successful season and many of them will be moving up to the varsity team for the 2022 volleyball season.
