The girls Flag Football team came up just short of their goal, losing in the championship game(16-7), but ending the season in 2nd with a final record of 6-3 (including the playoff and championship game). Though it was devastating for the girls to come in 2nd, they are proud with how far they came as a team and how hard they worked throughout the season.
The team’s coach, Adrian Poot, who was in his 1st year as head coach, was really happy with the way the season turned out. In particular, he mentioned the dedication and commitment of the players. Since the first day back from winter break (despite the season not starting until late February), the girls have been conditioning and practicing everyday for the past 4 months straight. Coach Adrian says, “At the beginning of January I started with 5 athletes and ended with 11 committed student athletes and I’m proud of what we accomplished this year.”
The girls are also proud of the effort they gave throughout the season and how far they were able to get. Receiver and safety of the team, Daniela C., says, “We were the underdogs this season. We played each game with none of us getting a break yet we came so close to winning that championship. We gave each game our all and that’s what matters.”
Despite all of the positives, there are a few things Coach Adrian knows he needs to work on for next season. His first plans for next year include more team bondings and working on defense. With only 1 team bonding outing the entire season, some players felt they weren’t as close as they could have been if they had spent more time together. They felt this also affected their play on the field.
The team also didn’t have defensive coordinator, Joseph Ale, until the last week of the season. Though he did show up at some practices, coach Ale’s commitment to the girls on an everyday basis didn’t happen due to his other time commitments of and a personal team he was playing on for at his college.
Coach Adrian is now looking forward as he is looking to recruit new players for next year with a meeting potentially taking place during May. He looks forward to coaching next season and grow from the experiences he learned about this past season as head coach.
Additionally, the players are also looking forward to next season. Junior Katelyn A. says. “We did a lot this season, but I hope next year we’re able to get more people to join so we can work to make it to champs again. Aside from that, I hope we’re able to have fun and make new memories.”
