Matching costumes with my siblings

By Staff writer, Brandon R.

For a few years in a row during elementary school, my siblings and I would look for matching costumes for Halloween, usually inspired by movies we watched. Between myself and the 3 siblings that are around my age, at least 2 of us would find costumes that went together.

Halloween in my Elementary was a big deal as they’d have us do a parade around the school where we would see each other’s costumes, and the kindergarteners usually performed Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in the courtyard.

The first time we matched costumes was when I was in the 2nd grade & the Ninja Turtles movie had come out. I was dressed as Leonardo, and my siblings were the others. We all had a bit of trouble deciding who would be who, but my mom stepped in and assigned us our characters based on who we most reminded her of.

We thought we were so cool, and as we went around the neighborhood that day people thought the matching costumes were a great idea, which brought us more sweets. It felt like something we should keep doing every year.

The next year, only my younger brother and I dressed up to match as we were Optimus Prime and Bumblebee from Transformers. The decision for these costumes was much quicker than the previous year as he and I planned it as soon as we watched one of the Transformers movies. He decided that I should be Optimus as I was the oldest, and he looked up to me.

The last time we wore a matching costume was in my 4th grade year where we all dressed up as Minions. We came up with the idea of minions because a Despicable Me movie came out around that time. But after that, we started to find the Halloween holiday a bit dull since people in our area didn’t give out treats worth purchasing costumes.

We also knew those were the final moments with matching costumes and just costumes at all because our parents had gotten tired of us arguing about who should be whom, as well as the costumes were expensive. And probably most importantly,my brother went to middle school which disrupted the whole matching thing.

Now that the time has passed, I realize that those moments are something I can’t go back to, but I’m grateful that they happened. They formed a strong bond between my brothers and I, one that I wish we still had now, especially with my older brother gone from the house. Matching Halloween costumes with him, and my other brothers  will always be a welcomed memory.
