Teachers feel hall walking curbed

By Marilyn R & Samantha P, staff writers

After coming back from distance learning last year , the school halls were chaotic with numerous students in the halls during class time; slamming doors, screaming into classrooms and running up & down the halls.  To reduce the number of kids in the hall, the new principal, Mr. Avila, has taken action on several steps to try and reduce the amount of students in the halls. So, the Galileo Press asked teachers, “Do you think that hall walking has gotten better this school year?”

“Overall at least at my corner it’s gotten better than last year and I hope it stays that way. There are moments when it is really quiet and it’s nice for me and my class. At least there is no door slamming this year.”

Ms. Ung, Psychology Teacher, History Teacher

“Better. It’s gotten better than last year, less kids screaming and running around and less distracting to my students. And with the new homeroom schedule, it has gotten better less kids in the halls.”

Mr. Seligson, History teacher

“It has gotten significantly better from my understanding the kids that roam around aren’t throwing things into class, slamming doors, yelling into classes. I don’t even see that at all. So it has gotten better.”

Mr. Delgado, Ethnic Studies, History teacher

“Students walking in the halls during class time makes me sad that they don’t want to be in their classes and something has happened to them that makes them not want to be in class and rather be in the class than learning in class with their peers. I think it feels pretty similar to how it did last year. I’m trying to teach with the door open but at times I do have to close my door because it just gets too loud and crazy in the halls. If I say something to students they look at me and just ignore me.”

Ms. Gates, English Teacher

“Last year was intense. I remember being in my room one time, and these kids had squirt guns but the weird thing is that no one reacted- it was kinda our norm. It went to a place where it wasn’t well last year. What I do notice is that there is a lot more happening on the third floor than on the fourth floor. The fourth floor is much more peaceful. The thought of knowing that the principal is on the floor makes kids not want to be caught by him. Yea, I guess it is a little better there still are some groups of people but not as much as last year.”

Ms. Alicia, Spanish and English Teacher

“I would say hall walking has gotten better it’s never any reason to it its just kids kinda picking a choice when they wanna go to class and arrive at school. Yea I would say it has gotten better than last year.”

Mr. O’Connor, History Teacher

“Roughly. It’s hard to judge at the beginning of the year but it has slowed down. There aren’t any disturbances from what I experienced. From what I saw, less students are walking around when they shouldn’t be. It’s to be expected at times but it’s less than before.”

Mr. Matawaran, Ethnic studies, and history teacher

“With this new principal, he is out and about so it’s easier to do our jobs. When he’s talking to kids and making sure where they are supposed to be that helps too. Some kids like to hang out in the halls so that’s why I’m here to make sure they don’t do anything bad. And if I’m here they won’t do anything. But it has gotten way better.”
